How long does deodorant balm last? Per jar, per day and once opened

How long a 50 g deodorant balm lasts with daily use, the maths behind it, and how long it keeps once opened.

Quick answer

A 50 g (1.76 oz) deodorant balm lasts about 6 to 8 weeks with daily use. That's how long one of our jars lasts Karina, who makes them, using a pea-sized amount per underarm daily, roughly 1 g (0.035 oz) a day. Once opened, use a Freshie Folk balm within 6 months and store it below 77°F (25°C).

How long does a 50 g deodorant balm last?

With a pea-sized amount on each underarm once a day, a 50 g balm lasts about 6 to 8 weeks. Use more, top up often, or share the jar, and it will run out sooner.

That figure comes from our own maker. Karina uses a pea-sized amount per underarm every day, and a 50 g Freshie Folk balm lasts her 6 to 8 weeks. It's one person's real use, not a guarantee, so treat it as a fair starting point rather than a promise.

To keep our own pages honest, we base any cost per day on the shorter end, 6 weeks. At US$10.95, that is about 26 cents a day for a single balm. At 8 weeks it's closer to 20 cents.

How much balm is a pea-sized amount?

A pea-sized amount is a small scoop about 7 to 8 mm (roughly a third of an inch) across, which weighs roughly 0.1 to 0.25 g, well under a hundredth of an ounce. In practice most people use more than that, about 0.45 to 0.6 g per underarm.

Here's the arithmetic. A garden pea is about 7 to 8 mm wide. A ball that size holds about 0.18 to 0.27 mL (around a twentieth of a teaspoon), and a balm made mostly of shea butter, coconut oil and beeswax weighs roughly 1 g per mL. So a textbook pea of balm is somewhere around 100 to 250 mg. For comparison, the whole 1.76 oz jar is 50 g, so one gram a day is the number that matters.

On paper, two of those a day would make a 50 g jar last 100 days or more. Real use is closer to 1 g a day, for three ordinary reasons:

  • A scooped pea of soft balm is usually generous. A 10 mm ball, a large pea, is already about 0.5 mL.
  • Some balm never reaches your skin. A little stays on your fingertips or the applicator, and the last gram or two clings to the edges and base of the jar.
  • You top up. Our label says to reapply as required, and hot days and workouts are when most people do.

How many days does a deodorant balm last at different amounts?

The amount you use matters more than anything else. This table shows how long a 50 g balm lasts at different daily amounts, counting both underarms.

Daily amount (both underarms)What that looks likeHow long 50 g lasts
0.5 gTwo small peas, no top-upsAbout 100 days (14 weeks)
0.9 gTwo generous peasAbout 56 days (8 weeks)
1.2 gTwo generous peas plus the odd top-upAbout 42 days (6 weeks)
1.7 gMorning application plus a full second round most daysAbout 29 days (4 weeks)

If your balm runs out in less than a month, you're probably using more than you need. Try half as much, rubbed in well, before deciding you need more.

How long do other natural deodorant balms and pastes last?

Most brands give a figure that works out to roughly 0.7 to 1.25 g a day. That's close to our own 1 g a day, which suggests a pea per underarm really does land around there for most people.

We divided each brand's stated size by the time it says a jar lasts. These are the brands' own figures, checked on their websites on 3 November 2026.

Brand and productSizeBrand's stated life with daily useWorks out to
No Pong Original (AU)35 gAbout a monthAbout 1.2 g a day
No Pong Original (AU)85 g3 to 4 monthsAbout 0.7 to 0.9 g a day
Black Chicken Axilla Deodorant Paste (AU)75 g2 to 3 monthsAbout 0.8 to 1.25 g a day
AKT The Deodorant Balm (UK)50 mL6 to 8 weeksAbout 0.9 to 1.2 mL a day
Akilah Fresh (US)1.4 oz (about 40 g)At least 8 weeksUp to about 0.7 g a day
Freshie Folk balm (AU)50 g6 to 8 weeks (our maker's own use)About 0.9 to 1.2 g a day

Two things stand out. Bigger jars don't change how much you use, only how long you go between buying. And a lower price per jar doesn't always mean a lower cost per day, so compare grams, not jars.

What does a deodorant balm cost per day in the US?

At about 1 g (0.035 oz) a day, cost per day is simply price divided by grams. Prices below are from each brand's own website, checked on 3 November 2026, before shipping. A stick applies differently from a balm, so read its daily figure as a rough guide.

ProductFormat and sizePrice (US$)Per ozAt 1 g a day

Ours sits between the two per ounce. Akilah Fresh says its 1.4 oz container can last 2 to 3 months or longer depending on use, which works out to roughly 0.45 to 0.65 g a day.

How long does a deodorant balm last on your skin each day?

There's no fixed number of hours. How long you stay fresh depends on how much you sweat, the weather, what you're doing and what you're wearing, so most people apply in the morning and top up when they need to.

A deodorant works on odor, not sweat. Body odor happens when bacteria on your skin break down sweat (NHS), so heat, exercise and tight synthetic clothing all make a difference. Across a long day, the bicarb in our balm keeps working on smell and the arrowroot and kaolin soak up a little dampness, while your sweat carries on as usual.

For a long or hot day, these habits help more than a bigger scoop:

  1. Start with clean, completely dry skin. Balm on damp skin doesn't spread as well.
  2. Use a small amount and rub it in. A thin, even layer works better than a thick one sitting on the surface.
  3. Top up after exercise or a shower. Rinse or wipe first if you can, then apply a little more.
  4. Wear breathable fabrics. Cotton, linen and wool let sweat evaporate.

Our underarm care routine covers washing, drying and the rest of the daily steps.

How long does deodorant balm keep once it's opened?

Use a Freshie Folk balm within 6 months of opening, and store it below 77°F (25°C) in a dry place. Other brands set their own period, so check your label.

In the US there's no legal requirement for cosmetics to carry an expiry date at all; working out shelf life is the maker's job (FDA). So the open-jar symbol with a number and the letter M, such as "6M", that you may see on imported products is the brand's own guidance rather than a federal rule. It's called the period after opening, and European and UK law use it to mark how long a product can be used safely once opened, on products that last more than 30 months unopened.

Brands choose different periods. No Pong says 6 months once used (No Pong FAQ), and Black Chicken gives a period after opening of 12 months (Black Chicken FAQ). Ours is 6 months. With daily use, a 50 g balm is finished long before that.

The FDA lists what wears a cosmetic out over time: fingers bring in microorganizms, moisture such as bathroom steam helps them grow, and heat, sunlight and air can change color, texture and smell. Your fingers and the air reach a balm every time you open the jar, so keeping it clean, closed and cool matters.

How can you tell if a deodorant balm has gone off?

Stop using a balm if it smells different from when you opened it, shows any spots or fuzz, or has changed color. Those are signs it's past its best.

A change in texture on its own is usually about temperature, not age. A balm made with shea butter and coconut oil softens above about 77°F (25°C) and firms up in the cold. If ours turns soft, a short time in the fridge firms it again. Black Chicken notes the same thing about its paste: it may melt, harden or look grainy with the weather, and they say that doesn't affect how it works (Black Chicken FAQ).

If you're unsure, and especially if it's well past its period after opening, replace it.

How do you make a deodorant balm last longer?

Use less, keep the jar clean, and store it somewhere cool. Most of the difference between 4 weeks and 8 weeks comes from the amount you scoop.

  1. Scoop with an applicator. A clean applicator picks up a small, even amount and keeps fingers out of the jar. Our Bamboo Applicator is made for this. Rinse it and let it dry after use.
  2. Warm a small amount first. Hold it between your fingertips for a few seconds so it melts and spreads thinly. Our guide on how to apply deodorant balm walks through it.
  3. Apply to dry skin. It spreads further, so you need less.
  4. Close the lid every time. It keeps dust and moisture out.
  5. Store it below 77°F (25°C) and out of the shower. A drawer or cupboard is better than a sunny windowsill or a hot car.
  6. Use the edges. The last few grams sit around the sides and base. A clean applicator gets most of it out.

Is it better to open one jar at a time or rotate scents?

If you use about 1 g a day, you can rotate three scents and still finish them inside 6 months. If you use less, open one at a time so none sits open too long.

Rotating three 50 g balms at about 1 g a day means 150 g lasts around 18 to 24 weeks. That fits inside the 6 months after opening, which is about 26 weeks. A lighter user at 0.5 g a day would take around 300 days to finish all three, so it's better to open one, finish it, then start the next.

FAQ

How long does a 50 g deodorant balm last?

About 6 to 8 weeks with a pea-sized amount per underarm once a day. That's our maker's own use of a 50 g Freshie Folk balm, about 1 g a day. It runs out sooner if you use more or top up often.

How much deodorant balm should I use?

Start with a pea-sized amount per underarm, warmed on your fingertips and rubbed in until it disappears. Use a little more on hot days or after exercise. If you can see or feel balm sitting on your skin, you've used too much.

Does deodorant balm expire?

Yes. Use a Freshie Folk balm within 6 months of opening. Other brands set their own period after opening, often shown on the label as an open-jar symbol with a number such as 6M or 12M.

Can I use deodorant balm that has melted?

Usually, yes. Softening in heat is normal for a balm made with shea butter and coconut oil. Pop it in the fridge for a short time to firm it up. If it smells different, has spots or has changed color, replace it.

Why does my deodorant balm run out so fast?

Most often it's the amount. A generous scoop can be two or three times a textbook pea. Try a smaller amount warmed on your fingertips, apply it to completely dry skin, and use an applicator to scoop.

How long do three balms last?

About 18 to 24 weeks for one person using one balm at a time, based on 6 to 8 weeks per 50 g balm. If you rotate them, all three are finished inside 6 months at about 1 g a day.

Do US deodorants have an expiration date?

Not by law. The FDA doesn't require cosmetics to carry one, so any date or open-jar symbol is the maker's guidance.
